Monmouth U. Poll: Christie Up 14%
According to a new Monmouth University poll, Chris Christie has expanded his lead over Corzine to a commanding 50%-36%:
The latest Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll finds Republican challenger Chris Christie widening his lead over incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine in the race for governor. Among likely voters, Christie now holds a 14 point advantage – 50% to 36% – with 4% for independent Chris Daggett. Last month, Christie held an 8 point lead – 45% to 37% – among likely voters in this poll.
Among registered voters, including those both likely and unlikely to vote on November 3rd, the gap narrows to 4 points – 43% for Christie to 39% for Corzine – which is statistically similar to the 6 point gap among registered voters in the July poll.
Looking at some of the details of the Monmouth poll, it is clear that Corzine is really only drawing support from hard-core Democrats. Thus, you see his 39% support among registered voters above, and similar levels of support on individual issues like health care, the environment and improving New Jersey’s cities.
Interestingly, property taxes remain far and away the #1 issue for NJ voters (42%) followed by the economy (21%). Considering that the Chris Christie platform offers little in the way of reducing property taxes (as it would require significant changes to the state’s education formula that he appears unwilling to tackle), this represents the biggest pitfall for Mr. Christie if he wins the governorship (as I presume he will).
The bottom line is Corzine remains unpopular and unlikeable and his tenure is seen as a failure. For these reasons, he will be fired in November. Get ready to say ‘Governor Christie’ for the next 4 years.
